Masking Tape

Masking tape

As we plan and work on painting a scale model we may find some bits are not properly separated in order to paint them with more than one colour with them overlapping. For these cases or ones where we would like to limit the zones paint can reach, which is common when using techniques such as camouflage, shading or even when applying varnish, masking tape is the answer.

Its usage is simple enough. We need only to cover the spots we want to leave alone with the masking tape while making sure that there are no gaps where paint may flow through. The reason hobby masking tape is prefered comes from this adhering process since the glue on this kind of products is weaker and it will not lift or peel anything we have placed on the surface of the model.

How to pick the adequate masking tape

It's a simple enough process but the less mistakes we make, the better result we'll obtain.

The width of the masking tape must be large enough to cover the zone/s we want to without requiring much adjustment. This is crucial to avoid paint leaks below or around it. Most brands offer multiple sizes like Tamiya or Mr.Hobby and some others also offer a cut-as-needed format like MIG does.

The strength of the glue is also something to keep an eye on if we're gonna mask a piece that has already been painted, applied decals to or varnished because a too-strong glue will lift everything. There's specific tapes for this purpose, such as the Softouch Series from AMMO that ensure great protection without risks to the layers below.
