SD - Super Deformed
Welcome to the home of SD gunpla, the chibi-proportion side of the hobby where every Mobile Suit gets squished into a head-heavy, big-eyed, grin-on-the-face version of itself. The format has been around since 1988 and remains one of the most accessible ways into Gunpla, whether you are eight years old, a returning hobbyist, or a hardcore builder who wants a fast, cheap, fun build between bigger projects.
The big draw is simplicity. Super deformed gunpla kits are small (most fit in your palm), build in under an hour, and almost always cost less than any other grade. You snap them together, no glue required, no nippers strictly necessary (though you should still use them), and you end up with a stubby, characterful figure that looks great next to a 1/144 or 1/100 build. They are also a fantastic way to test paint schemes, panel lining, or weathering techniques without committing to a full HG or MG project.
What makes the gunpla SD lineup interesting in 2026 is how much it has evolved. The classic BB Senshi numbering ran for decades and gave us hundreds of kits, including the wild SD Sangoku Soketsuden line where Mobile Suits cosplay as Three Kingdoms warriors, and the SDW Heroes lineup that mixes Gundams with knights, samurai, and ninjas. Bandai later introduced three modern SD families that solved the old issues with stickers and color separation: SD EX-Standard for clean snap-fit builds, SD Cross Silhouette for builders who want adjustable proportions, and the premium Master Grade SD line with full inner frame engineering.
If you are new to SD, start with the modern lines. SDEX RX-78-2 and SDEX Strike Gundam are the gateway picks: classic suits, clean color separation, and the build is forgiving for absolute beginners. If you want articulation and the option to make the figure taller with proper proportions, SDCS Sazabi and SDCS Nu Gundam are the go-to choices. For seasoned builders chasing the best engineering currently available in the SD format, MGSD Freedom Gundam is the benchmark and worth every euro.
The SD gunpla look has personality you do not get anywhere else. A stocky Sazabi or a chunky Unicorn lined up next to full-size kits adds variety to a shelf, and the smaller scale means you can build a whole faction without needing a bigger room. This is also where Gunpla started for a lot of builders in the 90s and early 2000s, so there is a strong nostalgia factor running through the format that the modern lines lean into without losing the chibi charm.
Across the full super deformed gunpla catalog you will find Universal Century icons, alternate universe favorites like Wing and Seed, plus exclusive SD-only designs from the SD Universe shows. Pricing across the format is wide: a basic SDEX kit costs about the same as a sandwich, while a flagship MGSD release sits at premium grade pricing. The variety means you can dip a toe into the format with five euros or commit fully with a hundred, and either way you end up with something fun on the shelf.
