SDCS - SD Cross Silhouette
SD Cross Silhouette, or SDCS, is Bandai's smartest take on the classic super deformed format. Launched in 2018, the line introduced an idea no other SD format had attempted: an inner frame system. Every SDCS gunpla kit ships with two sets of legs, the standard SD chibi pair and the optional CS Frame, which is taller and more proportional to a normal Mobile Suit. You choose which look you want before you build, or you swap between them later. Hands down one of the cleverest engineering moves in the entire SD lineup.
The articulation is also a noticeable step up from older SD gunpla formats. SDCS kits typically have working knees, hip joints with proper range, and shoulders that actually let the suit hold a weapon in two hands. Compared to the stiff classic BB Senshi pose-anything-as-long-as-its-the-base-stance look, SDCS feels like a proper modern kit shrunk down. Detail molding is also sharper, panel lines are deeper, and color separation is excellent across most releases.
Build time runs about an hour, sometimes a bit longer if you go for the CS Frame configuration. Part count is higher than a basic SD EX-Standard kit, which means a more satisfying build session, but it is still beginner-friendly and totally snap-fit. No glue, no paint required, just a good pair of nippers and an evening.
For first picks, the SDCS Sazabi and SDCS Nu Gundam are the iconic choices. Both look fantastic in either configuration, and the optional CS Frame makes the Sazabi in particular feel almost like a chibi RG. SDCS Sinanju is another standout if you are into anti-hero suits, all crimson and gold and very photogenic. SDCS Crossbone Gundam X1 is one of the best-engineered entries in the line. SDCS RX-78-2 and SDCS Wing Gundam Zero EW are solid safe picks if you are starting your collection with classic suits.
Where SDCS sits in the broader lineup matters. It is a step up from SDEX in price, complexity, and articulation, but well below the price and effort of Master Grade SD. Think of it as the sweet spot in the SD format: enough engineering to feel like a serious build, low enough commitment that you can finish one in a single sitting. It is also a great way to test custom paint schemes before committing them to a larger 1/144 or 1/100 build.
The gunpla SD Cross Silhouette catalog covers Universal Century icons, Alternate Universe favorites, and a handful of original SDCS-only designs. Most kits are reasonably priced and stay in stock, but a few of the older Sangoku or seasonal releases can disappear quickly when they run out. We restock through our official Bandai channels, so check the Arrival and Restock section if you are hunting for a specific older release.
