What is the Build Universe
The Build Universe is not a war story. There are no factions fighting for control of Earth, no colonies demanding independence, and no masked men with personal vendettas. The premise is simpler and more self-aware than anything else in the franchise: these are shows about people who build, customize, and battle with Gunpla inside the story itself. The hobby is the plot.
In the Build Universe, Gundam model kits come to life. Whether through mysterious particles, virtual reality systems, or digital scanning technology, the Gunpla themselves become the stars of the show. Characters design wild custom builds, heavily modify existing suits, and battle using their own creations. It is Gundam about Gundam and it works because the passion for building and customizing is treated with complete sincerity.
These series share a lighter tone than the main timelines. The stakes are personal rather than political, focusing on passion, friendship, and the joy of building. Build Fighters (2013, 25 episodes)
The series that started it all. Young builder Sei Iori and his mysterious partner Reiji take on the world’s top Gunpla fighters. Loaded with loving references to every corner of Gundam history. Still the gold standard of the Build Universe.
Build Divers (2018, 25 episodes)
The Build concept evolves into a VR massively multiplayer game called GBN. Riku Mikami and his friends dive in with digital versions of their Gunpla, facing ever-higher stakes. Continued in Re:RISE (2019), which begins light-hearted and becomes surprisingly emotional.
Gundam Breaker Battlogue (2021, 6 episodes)
A fast-paced ONA linked to the Gundam Breaker games. Wild custom hybrid kits, underground battles, and some of the most imaginative Gunpla designs the Build Universe has ever seen. Short, free on the Gundam YouTube channel, and gone in the blink of an eye.
Build Metaverse (2023, 3 episodes)
A crossover celebration marking ten years of the Build Universe. Characters from every Build era gather in a shared virtual space. Primarily a love letter and vehicle for new kit releases, but a genuinely fun watch for anyone who has followed the series from the start.
