Brand: DSPIAE

The MKA is where DSPIAE's marker range steps up in both formulation and precision. Like the rest of the DSPIAE lineup it's eco-friendly and water-based, but the similarities stop at the tip. Where the MK, MKF, and MKM series use a soft sponge, the MKA comes with dual interchangeable nylon tips: a 0.5mm point and a 2.0mm wedge stored inside the cap, plus a self-levelling formula designed to push the metallic quality to a different level entirely. This is the tool you reach for when you need true super metallic intensity on a specific detail without setting up a full airbrush session.

The color range is broader than the MKM series and covers ground that soft-tip metallics genuinely struggle to match: MKA-01 Metallic Red, MKA-02 Metallic Orange, MKA-03 Metallic Yellow, MKA-04 Metallic Chartreuse, MKA-05 Metallic Green, MKA-06 Metallic Cyan, MKA-07 Metallic Blue, MKA-08 Metallic Purple, MKA-09 Metallic Magenta, MKA-10 Golden, MKA-11 Silver, MKA-12 Bronze. The chromatic spread, cyan, chartreuse, and magenta as full super metallics, opens up mecha model kit color schemes that would otherwise require mixing custom tints. These are colors builders actually use on energy conduit accents, exotic armor tones, and iridescent weapon effects.

The nylon tip gives you tighter, more controlled application than the sponge format. The self-levelling formula means even a single smooth pass produces a consistent, even metallic coat with fewer do-overs and less frustration. The finer metallic particles compared to standard acrylic metallic markers are a big part of what makes the finish read differently. If you go over an edge, the DSPIAE Universal Eraser Pen corrects it cleanly while the paint is still fresh.

The MKA is also part of the MKS super metallic system: the paint can be extracted from the marker and diluted at a 1:0.5 ratio for airbrush application, making each marker a dual-format metallic model paint. MKA-11 Silver can even be used in an airbrush without dilution for a direct chrome effect. Check the rest of the painting tools range alongside these, and the water-based MKM metallic markers if you need sponge-tip metallic coverage in the same session.

How to Use

Start with a clean part, as grease and fingerprints are the enemy of super metallic finishes. Wipe the surface down thoroughly before you do anything else. Shake the marker well to keep the metallic particles in suspension, then press the nylon tip on a scrap piece to get the flow going before touching the kit. The MKA has two interchangeable tips: swap between the 0.5mm point for fine detail and the 2.0mm wedge for broader areas by wrapping the installed tip in a paper tissue, pulling it out, and inserting the other from inside the cap. Apply in long, even strokes moving in a single direction, as cross-painting disrupts the metallic particles and affects the finish. The self-levelling formula handles a lot of the evening-out work, so trust it and don't overwork the surface. Keep layers thin, let each one dry, and build up until you're satisfied. Lighter colors over darker surfaces will need more passes, same as any marker.

For a more serious result, sand the area with 1000 to 2000 grit first, then clean off every trace of dust before applying. The sanded surface dramatically improves adhesion and gives the super metallic finish a more consistent, even look. Expect more layers to compensate for the added absorption. It is a longer process and not for every build, but some builders genuinely enjoy that level of surface prep and find it gives them greater control over the final finish. To use the paint in an airbrush, extract it from the marker body and dilute at 1:0.5 with water. MKA-11 Silver goes straight in undiluted for a chrome finish. Rinse airbrush equipment with water after use.

The MKA is also an excellent companion after an airbrush session for any super metallic highlights that are too small or intricate to mask for spraying. Tiny edge hits, vernier details, weapon reflections: these take disproportionate masking effort for the airbrush, but a marker handles them in seconds with surgical precision. Since the formula is acrylic and water-based, it goes over airbrushed acrylic paint cleanly with no lifting or reaction. Correct any overruns with the DSPIAE Universal Eraser Pen while fresh, then seal with a gloss or semi-gloss top coat.
