Brand: DSPIAE

If you've ever wanted to paint a specific area on your Gunpla without pulling out a full brush setup, the DSPIAE MK markers are exactly what you're reaching for. These are water-based acrylic paint markers built around a soft sponge tip that responds to pressure. A light touch gives you fine strokes; more pressure with the side of the tip covers broader areas. The principle is simple: you get paint where you want it, in the amount you want, without fuss.

The MK lineup covers 12 colors tuned for real mecha model kit work: MK-01 Pure Black, MK-02 White, MK-03 Grey, MK-04 Red, MK-05 Blue, MK-06 Green, MK-07 Yellow, MK-08 Mecha Grey, MK-09 Purple, MK-10 Pink, MK-11 Sky Blue, and MK-12 Armored Green. These aren't generic hues. Mecha Grey and Armored Green alone cover a solid chunk of inner frame and military palette work, and the full spread handles most of the spot work and color-blocking you'd encounter across a typical Gunpla build.

Because the formula is eco-friendly and water-based, working with it stays clean and forgiving. If you go over an edge or change your mind, the DSPIAE Universal Eraser Pen lifts the paint precisely before it fully sets, a much tidier solution than trying to mask mistakes on an already-built kit. Coverage lands best on a prepared surface, so a light pass with 1000-grit sandpaper or a thin primer coat makes a visible difference in adhesion and finish quality. Seal with a top coat once done.

The MK series pairs naturally with the MKM metallic markers and MKF fluorescent markers from the same DSPIAE range if you're building out a complete hobby marker set. All three lines share the same soft tip format and water-based formula, so workflow is identical across them with no learning curve switching between serie

How to Use

The most important thing before you put any DSPIAE marker on a part is making sure the surface is free of grease and fingerprints. A quick wipe-down is all it takes. After that, use it the same way you'd use any conventional marker or brush: apply directly to the part, work in thin layers, let each one dry before adding the next, and build up until you're happy with the coverage. Lighter colors over darker plastic will naturally need more passes to fully cover the surface, so be patient with those and don't try to rush it with a single heavy coat.

If you want to push the result further, a light sand with 1000 to 2000 grit sandpaper before you start makes a real difference. Sand the area, then clean the dust off thoroughly before touching the marker to the surface, as any residue left behind will get trapped under the paint. The sanded surface gives the marker better mechanical grip, which means stronger adhesion and a more consistent finish. Keep in mind that a sanded surface absorbs paint more than a smooth one, so expect to lay down more layers to achieve the same depth of color. It is a longer process, though plenty of builders enjoy that extra level of surface prep for the control it gives over the final result.

One place where DSPIAE markers really earn their spot in a build workflow is right after airbrushing. Small highlights and edge accents are exactly the kind of detail that takes a frustrating amount of time to mask for the airbrush, and the masking itself often creates new problems on a finished kit. A marker handles those touches directly and precisely, with no masking required. Since the formula is acrylic and water-based, it sits cleanly on top of airbrushed acrylic paint without lifting or reacting. Correct any overruns with the DSPIAE Universal Eraser Pen while the paint is still fresh, then seal with a top coat once you're done.
