Mobile Suit Gundam (1979)
It's UC 0079. The Principality of Zeon has declared independence from the Earth Federation and launched the One Year War using a new weapon nobody on the Federation side was ready for: the mobile suit. Zeon tears through the Federation's conventional forces in the early months of the conflict, and by the time the story begins, millions are already dead.
A teenager named Amuro Ray, living on the research colony Side 7, stumbles into the cockpit of the Federation's secret prototype, the RX-78-2 Gundam, when Zeon forces attack. He reads the manual in the middle of the battle and figures it out. From that point on, he and the ragtag crew of the warship White Base are running for their lives across space and Earth, pursued by Zeon's best pilots with a machine that nobody fully understands yet. On the other side, Char Aznable, the Red Comet, flies a custom red Zaku II and is hunting the White Base for reasons that are both military and deeply personal.
Why this show still matters
In 1979, mecha anime was dominated by super robot shows, cartoonish heroes piloting impossible machines to defeat evil. Mobile suit gundam threw all of that out. Mobile suits broke down. Pilots got tired, made mistakes, had breakdowns. People on both sides had reasons for fighting that made sense. It was the first mecha show that treated the genre as a war story instead of a superhero story, and it invented what fans now call the "real robot" genre. It flopped on first broadcast, got cancelled early, and then became one of the most important anime ever made when bandai gunpla model kits of the suits started selling out across Japan. The gundam model kit literally saved the franchise before the franchise had even properly started.
The iconic suits
The gunpla rx 78, the RX-78-2 Gundam, is the one that started it all. Red, white, blue and yellow, beam rifle in hand. It has been released in every grade Bandai makes, from gunpla hg all the way to gunpla perfect grade, and every version still sells. On the Zeon side, the MS-06 Zaku II is the most recognizable enemy suit in the entire hobby. Green, mono-eye, shoulder spikes. Char's red custom version, the MS-06S Commander Type, is one of the most built gunpla kits in history and the origin of the "three times faster" legend. The MS-07B Gouf followed as a close-combat Earth specialist, the Rick Dom came next for space, and the MSN-02 Zeong closed out the war as Char's final suit, a massive Newtype platform built for remote weapons. If you're building a gunpla collection around the One Year War, this is the roster.
The moments everyone remembers
- Amuro reads the manual mid-battle — Episode one. No training, no preparation. He figures out the RX-78-2 on the fly while Zeon is attacking the colony around him. Sets the tone for everything that follows.
- "This is no Zaku, boy. No Zaku!" — Ramba Ral's line before his Gouf engages the White Base defense. One of the most quoted lines in the entire franchise.
- Char betrays Garma Zabi — Cold, calculated, and reveals that Char has been playing a completely different game from the start.
- Lalah Sune enters the story — Her arrival changes the Amuro vs. Char rivalry from a military conflict into something far more personal and tragic, laying the groundwork for everything in the UC timeline that follows.
- The Battle of Solomon — The Federation's massive push into Zeon's space territory. The scale of the war becomes fully clear for the first time.
- The final duel at A Baoa Qu — Amuro in the RX-78-2 against Char in the Zeong. Both suits fall apart, both pilots eject, and they finish it on foot with swords. Raw, chaotic, and the template for every gundam gunpla rivalry that came after it.
