Cutting masking tape with a hobby knife or scissors seems like it should be fine. The problem is that a dragged blade or a scissor cut compresses the tape edge and lifts the adhesive, which means paint bleeds under it. The GH-SMN-125 solves that with a dedicated nipper blade designed specifically for tape. It cuts with a clean, perpendicular snap rather than a drag, leaving a precise edge that stays flat against the surface.
The effective blade length is 12mm, which covers most masking tape widths you'd use in a model build. When it cuts cleanly you hear a distinct snap, so you know immediately if the cut went through properly. It also works on guide tape and double-sided tape.
One thing worth knowing: this tool is for tape only. Don't use it on plastic, metal, or anything else — it's not built for it and will not cut correctly.
