The YF-29 Durandal Valkyrie is Alto Saotome's upgraded ride in the climax of Macross Frontier, the 2008 TV series and its 2011 film finale "Sayonara no Tsubasa". Built as a next-generation variable fighter for the S.M.S., the Durandal pushes YF-24 Evolution technology further with fold quartz power, fold wave capability, and a slick new tactical aerial package. Mechanical designer Shoji Kawamori gave it sharper lines and a sleeker silhouette than anything that came before. Alto's white-and-red colors are the version most fans picture when they hear "YF-29".
This is the second kit in Bandai's new HG Macross line, following the YF-19 that launched the series in late 2022. The Shortcut Change system carries over: key parts swap out between Battroid, Gerwalk, and Fighter modes instead of forcing a full transformation. That keeps the sculpt tight in every configuration and the build sturdy enough to handle without anxiety. For Macross Frontier fans, this is the first real shot at a stable, officially-engineered Durandal in plastic.
Articulation is a real step up from the YF-19. The shoulders use a pull-out joint for deeper arm movement, and the chest has three-axis articulation for genuine front, back, and side bending. Missile hatches on the shoulders and legs deploy, the knife stores into the shield when not in use, and expressive hand parts handle the full range of in-show poses. You get a gun pod, shield, knife, full landing gear, and Fighter mode conversion parts. Sticker reliance is typical HG territory, but color separation on the red, white, and black plate sections is clean.
