Airbrush
An airbrush changes everything about the way your builds look. The jump from hand brushing or rattle cans to a proper airbrush setup is one of the biggest single upgrades you can make as a builder. Smooth, even coats, real control over paint thickness, soft gradients, pre-shading, and a level of finish that simply is not possible any other way.
An airbrush uses compressed air to atomize paint into a fine mist that you direct through a nozzle. The result is thin, uniform coverage that dries fast and builds up in controlled layers, which is why airbrushed finishes look so clean compared to anything else.
Gravity feed airbrushes have the paint cup on top, use less paint, and are easier to clean between colors, making them the go-to for color work and painting individual parts on scale model kits and Gunpla. Siphon feed airbrushes pull paint from a bottle below, giving you more capacity for large area coverage, batch priming, or heavy use sessions where you do not want to keep refilling a small cup.
A single action airbrush lets you control airflow through the trigger, but paint output is pre-set before you spray using an adjustment knob. A dual action airbrush puts both controls under your finger simultaneously: pressing down governs air, pulling back governs paint. That real time control is why the vast majority of modellers prefer dual action.
Needle size determines what each airbrush does best. A 0.3mm is the all rounder. A 0.2mm gives finer precision for detail work on 1/144 scale kits. A 0.5mm covers large surfaces fast. Some airbrushes come with two needles so you can swap between tasks. Many builders prefer keeping separate airbrushes with different needle sizes to avoid swapping mid-session and reduce the risk of dropping and bending a needle.

MU Staff recommendation
If you are a beginner or unsure whether airbrushing is for you, start with an entry level airbrush. If budget is tight, go for a model with two needles included. If space and budget allow, we always recommend two airbrushes: a 0.2mm for detail and a 0.5mm for coverage. That combination covers everything you will need.
