The Gaahleri Kaleido Metallic Markers use water-based acrylic ink and Japan-imported valve-type round tips, which means smooth, consistent ink flow with virtually no visible brush strokes and no sponge fiber buildup. The ink is stored inside the marker and only activates when you press the tip, so there is no premature drying between sessions.

These are a great option when you need to get metallic detail work done fast. Think snap building a kit and wanting to enhance a few parts quickly, or being mid-airbrush session and realizing you have two or three small metallic parts left that would take ten times longer to mask, prime, and prep for the airbrush than to just hit with a marker in a couple of minutes. That is exactly the situation these are made for.

The 10-color range covers the metallic tones you actually reach for on mecha and vehicle builds: aluminium, stainless steel, dark steel, dark iron, gun metal, zirconium black, red copper, dark gold, scorched gold, and flashy gold. Each marker has a color-indicated cap and label so you are not guessing which one you picked up. Despite being a marker, the leveling is surprisingly good, good enough to cover medium-sized areas cleanly and not just tiny edge highlights. One pass is the way to go: the formula is designed to lay down evenly in a single application rather than building up in layers. Scratch resistance is solid for a marker, but like any paint finish, a varnish coat on top is still recommended for proper protection.

To use, shake the marker first, then press the tip gently on a spare piece of paper to activate the ink flow before applying to the model.

MU Staff comments

Besides being based on the same formula as the Kaleido KM Metal Colors paint line, what really makes these stand out is the tip. After testing them ourselves, the fact that you can go from very fine detail work all the way up to medium coverage areas, like parts of a shield on a 1/144 scale kit, in the same marker without losing control is genuinely useful. For builders focused on snap build, panel line, decals, and highlights, this is a very solid alternative to breaking out the airbrush for every small metallic accent.

One practical note from our experience: the tip tends to dry out from air exposure during use. Always press the tip down on a spare piece of paper first to get the ink flowing before touching the kit. If you press directly on the model to activate the flow, you risk a small ink splash that can be hard to fix on a metallic surface. To clean the tip properly, take a piece of kitchen paper towel, add a few drops of the Gaahleri eraser ink, and then gently but firmly press and pull in the direction of the tip to remove the dried ink that builds up between the hollow lines. That keeps the flow clean and consistent throughout your session.

The tips are not indestructible, but in our experience they hold up well enough that by the time the tip starts to wear out, you have more or less used up the ink inside the marker anyway.
