SDEX - SD EX-Standard
SD EX-Standard, or SDEX, is Bandai's modern take on the chibi-style Gunpla format. Released starting in 2014, the line was designed to fix the two complaints builders had with classic SD gunpla: too many stickers and not enough color separation. SDEX kits use multi-color runners so the major details come molded in the right colors straight out of the box, which means a clean, finished-looking build with minimal effort.
These are some of the easiest gunpla model kit options on the entire shelf. SDEX builds run between 30 and 60 minutes, all snap-fit, no glue, no painting required to look good. Part counts are low, runners are clearly labeled, and the instructions are simple enough that this is often the first kit recommended for kids or someone trying Gunpla for the first time. Pricing sits at the absolute entry level, so the barrier to picking one up is basically nothing.
Articulation in SDEX gunpla is intentionally limited. The arms swing, the head turns, and the legs move at the hips, but you are not getting MG-grade poses out of these. That is the trade-off for the simplicity. Where SDEX shines is in faithful color reproduction at chibi scale, allowing you to build a quick, recognizable version of an iconic Mobile Suit without a paint booth, primer, or weeks of free time. They look great in a row on a shelf, in a display cube, or stuck on a desk at work.
If you are picking your first one, the obvious starting points are SDEX RX-78-2 Gundam and SDEX Aile Strike Gundam. Both are forgiving builds that capture the original suits perfectly. SDEX Wing Gundam Zero is another strong pick if you grew up on Gundam Wing, with the trademark angel wings rendered cleanly in the chibi format. For Iron Blooded Orphans fans the recently released SDEX Barbatos is a great budget pickup. If you want something with red Char-faction energy, SDEX Sazabi delivers Char's final suit at the cheapest price tier in the entire catalog.
The line covers nearly every major saga, from Universal Century classics to Alternate Universe favorites. Pricing is consistently the lowest tier in the catalog, which makes SDEX a great pickup as a gift, a stocking filler, or a side project you can finish in one evening.
For builders who want a similar chibi aesthetic but with better articulation and adjustable proportions, take a look at SD Cross Silhouette. If you want full master grade engineering inside the SD silhouette, the premium Master Grade SD line is the next step up. And if you are using SDEX as a stepping stone toward proper 1/144 builds, the Entry Grade line offers the same beginner-friendly snap-fit experience at full scale.
Browse the SDEX catalog below for the current lineup. New entries are still being added with every reissue cycle, so it is worth checking back when a new show drops or a classic suit gets a fresh release. We restock through official Bandai channels weekly, which keeps the popular RX-78-2 and Strike variants in stock most of the time.
