The YF-19 is the star of Macross Plus, the 1994 OVA directed by Shoji Kawamori that pushed variable fighter design into new territory. A next-gen prototype built for Project Super Nova, it went wing-to-wing with the rival YF-21 in a brutal test program, piloted by ace pilot Isamu Alva Dyson. Forward-swept wings, thrust-vectoring engines, and a fighter-jock attitude make it one of the most recognizable mecha ever drawn. If you've seen the dogfight over Eden, you know exactly why this one has a cult following.
This is the first entry in Bandai's HG Macross line, released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original SDF Macross series. Rather than forcing a full three-way transformation (the thing that's broken every previous Variable Fighter kit on the market), Bandai went with a Shortcut Change system: key parts swap out between Battroid, Gerwalk, and Fighter modes. That design choice is the whole point. It frees up the sculpt and articulation range for each mode without the usual fragility compromises.
Polarized molding gives the canopy a real color-shifting effect under light, and articulation is surprisingly wide in all three modes because the internal structure isn't fighting the sculpt. You get a gun pod, shield, full landing gear set, and Pinpoint Barrier Punch effect parts to recreate the signature melee hit from the finale. Color separation is solid for a kit this size, with some sticker reliance for smaller markings. Third-party waterslides are an easy upgrade if you want a cleaner finish.
